Lucas May Petry from UFSC has been awarded a graduate ELAP scholarship to DAL!

We are very proud to announce that the early stage researcher Lucas May Petry, supervised by Prof. Vania Bogorny from Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil), won a competition for a scholarship from the Canadian Bureau of International Education (CBIE), which administers the Global Affairs Canada (former DFATD) scholarships. He has been awarded a graduate ELAP scholarship for a 5-6 month study period at our partner Dalhousie University (Canada) under the supervision of Prof. Stan Matwin. This result further reinforces the MASTER partnership creating a direct research collaboration between Brazil and Canada. Congratulations to Lucas, Vania and Stan!

During the month of May, CNR and UVSQ held secondments to Thira (Santorini Island, Greece). During this period the seconded researchers had the opportunity to collaborate with the Municipality of Thira. The objective was to better understand the tourism issues that the island is facing: the large flows of tourists arriving everyday tend to congest the island. Additionally, the discussions focussed on the kinds of data Thira have and which additional data they potentially collect in the future. Further work has been done in discussing some preliminary ideas of research solutions that could support a better tourism monitoring. From April 30 to May 4 we held an internal meeting among Thira, UPRC and CNR to discuss and start the work about tourism application scenario. In the picture we have Nikos from UPRC, Christallia from Thira and Chiara from CNR. During the secondments of CNR and UVSQ to Santorini, we are discussing the tourism issues that the Municipality have due to the huge flows of tourism arrivals, especially during summer, and the possible actions to be taken and data to be analysed. MASTER partners at ICDE 2018 Conference in Paris

ICDE (International Conference on Data Engineering) is one of the major conferences in the area of Data Management. The 34th edition was held in Paris between 16 and 19 April. There were more than 500 participants this year, among which four members from MASTER project. Iraklis Varlamis (HUA) has presented a paper entitled "Detecting Search and Rescue Missions from AIS Data" at DESWEB workshop. Redouane Bouhamoum (UVSQ) also presented his work entitled "Scaling Up Schema Discovery for RDF Datasets" in the same workshop. Today in Pisa we held a meeting between DAL, UNIVE and CNR. We see in the picture from left to right Prof. Stan Matwin (DAL), Chiara Renso (CNR), Alessandra Raffaeta' and Marta Simeoni (UNIVE). We had a fruitful discussion about sea monitoring applications from UNIVE and DAL, we identified the common problems, the techniques developed and the specific datasets used. We indeed planned the next secondments of UNIVE and CNR to DAL.
